Sachhar Committee
Report: Mapping Muslims
The
Sachhar Committee Report is a new and distinct
addition in the list of collecting data on the
backwardness of the Muslims in India. It is
important to note that it was set up by the
prime Minister of India as a ‘High Level
Committee’ for preparing the report on
social, economic and educational status of the
Muslim Community in India (vide notification
No. 850/3/C/3/05-Pol.). When it was tabled in
Parliament on 30 November 2006, there was no
uproar in the Lower House except that the Bhartiya
Janta Party opposed it. It was also commended
by its allies like the Janata Dal (U), Trinamool
Congress and others who are the partners of
national Democratic Alliance. The media has
also taken this report as a serious national
debate to look into the maladies of backwardness
of the Muslim community.
