The
International Dalit and Minorities Conference passed
the following Resolutions pertaining to Buddhism in
India :
1. It has been the
long-term desire of the Buddhist religious Minority
to be entrusted with the responsibility of the management
of the important Buddha Gaya Temple known as Bodh
Gaya Mahavihar. At present there is a Managing Committee
consisting of 9 members, of whom 4 are Buddhists and
4 are Hindus, with the D.M. Gaya as the Chairman (provided
that if he is not a Hindu, then the ADM).
The Bihar Act 1949 has to be amended to provide for
a Managing Committee with Buddhists as Chairman and
Secretary and the majority of the members to be Buddhist.
There can be a representative of DM, Gaya, a representative
of Archeological Department and a member of the Non-Buddhist
General Community.
2. Buddh Poornima
should be declared a public holiday under the Negotiable
Instruments Act.
3. Currently the
2550th “Maha Parinibbana” of the Buddha
is being celebrated and a National Committee with
the Prime Minister as Chairperson has been set up
by the Ministry of Culture. But there is no visible
sign or publicity drive for public enlightenment about
this important occasion.
Already half the year has passed. At least in the
remaining year there should be an organized drive
for multi channel publicity and activity for education
and enlightenment of the people about the Buddha and
his teachings and their relevance to India today.
A provision of Rs. 100 crores should be made to complete
the various projects already made to Government of
India in his regard.
4.
Work on the establishment of an International Buddhist
University, New Delhi should be taken up vigorously
and completed early, utilizing the grants made by
the Japanese people.
